  • Tripled the Mechanical/Electrical business volume in five years as the Mechanical & Electrical Principal at Vermeulens Cost Consultants; Supervised the costing of over 1000 projects totaling several billion dollars; Brought a number of innovations to the business process to make it more accountable, repeatable, and streamlined.
  • Negotiated a signed power sales agreement with Hydro Quebec for 150MW and supporting contracts required for project financing of an independent power and steam (cogeneration) plant including an EPC contract for $200 million.

 

2001-2008 Cogen-Energy. Principal Consultant
Assisted clients evaluating and developing combined heat and power and self generation projects. Performed feasibility studies for power, thermal and chilled water generation. Evaluated equipment selection and configurations for economic performance under PPA and merchant markets. Assisted clients in valuation of existing assets for acquisition. Optimized market value of operating assets within equipment and contractual parameters. Assisted a power equipment manufacturer in developing full service contract product, including financing, equipment supply, design/build and O&M contracts.

2003-2006 George Brown College (Part Time Instructor)
Developed and delivered courses leading to the CEC-M (Construction Estimator Certified-Mechanical) designation, for the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyours and George Brown College.

1996-2001 Vermeulens Cost Consultants. Mechanical/Electrical Principal
Specialized in providing cost estimates and cost control services for mechanical and electrical central and power plant systems for institutional and industrial clients. Conducted feasibility studies for cogeneration, self generation and heat recovery projects. Vermeulens specializes in design stage cost consulting for institutional clients in health care, academic, and government. Clients are architects or owners. Services include cost estimating, design review, value engineering, and tender analysis. I was responsible for the mechanical and electrical practice and MEP content of all projects.

 

1991-1995 ABB Canada /ABB Energy Ventures. Manager, Business Development
Asea Brown Boveri is a major supplier of utility gas and steam turbines and combined cycle power plants. Energy Ventures is an owner and investor in power projects. Developed energy projects; negotiated partnership and joint development agreements, power purchase agreements, steam and site agreements, EPC and power train contracts, prepared project information statements and presentations to investors and financiers; Coordinated technical concept and environmental permitting; Supervised development of pro-forma models. About half my time was spent on Canadian projects, and the remainder on US and international jobs with approximately a year spent on jobs in developing countries. Trained as an applications engineer for gas and steam turbines.

1989-1991 Intercity Gas Ltd. Financial Analyst/Co-generation
Developed financial pro-forma models for co-generation projects. Performed heat balances. Evaluated efficiency improvements and conducted life cycle cost analysis.
